In the corner of the yard is an area we call the forest. Visiting this area helps the children avoid being over-stimulated by the constant noise and commotion of their active play. This is our outside quite area where the children can get re-centered. The forest is not an area for toys but a place where the children can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet away from the busy play in the yard. In this area there are books to read, kaleidoscopes to look at, Moon Sand to sculpt, turtles to watch, or just gently rock back and forth on the swing. Some children come to the forest more often than others, but it is always available to everyone as a place to temporarily withdraw from the business of active play.
