Julie Rose — Music Teacher
Julie joined Shantivanam Children’s Community in July of 2008 and has been a wonderful addition to our staff. She grew up with musicians in her family and her grandmother, a professional piano teacher, started Julie on piano lessons when she was only 3 years old.
Julie attended Boise State University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in jazz guitar. She also received a Master of Education and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Boise State. Julie says she has played nearly every style of music at one time or another and has written music and performed in a variety of bands.
As part of Julie’s dissertation, she wrote some songs and also developed an interest in writing and wrote children’s stories, autobiographic narratives, and poetry. After college Julie moved to Seattle where she was the Educational Director for a residential addiction recovery program for teenage boys. In her work there she used music, writing, drama, and meditation to inspire the young men to draw on their strengths and continue their educations. Before retiring and moving to Encinitas, Julie was an elementary and pre-kindergarten music teacher for nearly 20 years. Julie released her first album of original songs in September 2008. She says her next goal is to publish some of her children’s stories and perhaps some of her narratives.
When Julie is not busy with her music, she indulges in her secret passion of gardening at the Self Realization Fellowship Encinitas Temple garden. Julie loves to spend time with her dog, Shanti, and her 21 year old bird, Gypsy. She also visits her son, Israel, in Arizona as often as possible. Israel is living at Rusty’s Morningstar Ranch, a wonderful residential program for adults with Autism.
